Laila!, an “up next” R&B artist and producer, coming straight out of Brooklyn, New York. She has started to gain a lot of traction this year from her two viral songs “Like That!” andNot My Problem” and has now released her debut album “Gap Year”. And let me just say that she understood the ENTIRE assignment. What truly stands out about Laila! is that she produced and wrote every song on the album…While only being 18 years of age! THIS ISN’T REGULAR but this is what music has been missing.

Insane. That was what came to mind while the last song was coming to an end. A very beautiful mix of love, laugh, live, and hurt, help, hate.

The album seems to be about the journey that Laila! has had growing up and becoming the “baby genius” that she is today. The project starts off with “Talent Show”. A full audio recording of Laila! performing at a local talent show before she had already made a name for herself. It gives off a “This is where it began” type of vibe; the song also followed up with a voicemail recording of a family member telling her to get up and go to school. Proceeding with 16 songs sharing her life memories and experiences.

If you’re as into music as me. You know that there are some songs/projects that just leave you speechless, making it hard for you to come up with the words to describe the sound or even the feeling it gives you. Music that you can write and talk about for 24 hours/7 days a week. “Gap Year” is indeed one of them! Laila!’s sound and delivery is very similar to artists’ like Kehlani and Brent Fiyaz. I highly recommend giving “Gap Year” a chance. It was definitely my Album of the Year.
